You’re engaged—cue the champagne pop and Pinterest boards! Now it’s time to start making some big decisions. One of the first questions couples ask is: When should we book our wedding photographer?
Let’s break it down.
Most couples book their photographer 9 to 18 months in advance, especially for spring and fall weddings. These seasons fill up fast (we’re talking “blink and it’s gone” fast), so the sooner you reach out, the better your odds of securing the artist you love.
But what if you’re planning on a shorter timeline? No stress. I always say: it never hurts to ask. If I’m available, I’m all in. If not, I’ll help point you toward someone amazing.
The “traditional” advice is to book your venue first, and that works for many couples. But here’s a little secret—you don’t have to follow that order. If there’s a photographer (or any vendor) whose work you’re obsessed with and who books quickly, you can absolutely start there.
Some couples have their hearts set on a specific photography style or person (hi, it me 🙋♀️), and in that case, it’s smart to reach out early and plan the date/venue around that availability. Don’t be afraid to prioritize what matters most to you.
