Have you ever wondered what it’s like to arrive at your wedding ceremony on a boat? Well, this Savannah wedding is for you!
Amara and Nonso’s wedding day at Chateau 1800 was the perfect celebration of Nigerian tradition and coastal Lowcountry beauty.
As a Savannah wedding photographer, I’m drawn to days like this one. The kind that are story-driven, layered with meaning, and full of the kind of love that is joyful and romantic.
Chateau 1800 sits next to Savannah in Rincon, Georgia, but it carries all the romance of a Savannah wedding venue. It has water views all the way around and a peninsula ceremony site that feels like you’re right in the middle of the water.
The forecast called for rain, and in a lot of ways, the couple got it — just not when it mattered. The morning stayed overcast, which at a venue like Chateau 1800 is a photographer’s gift. The skies created soft, even light across the water with no harsh shadows, and nothing to fight. The rain held off through the ceremony and portraits, then arrived right on cue once everyone was safely inside for the reception. They say rain on your wedding day is good luck. Amara and Nonso got the luck without ever getting wet.

This Savannah wedding ceremony took place under the romantic willow tree surrounded by water. But this ceremony had a surprise built into it that no one but Amara knew was coming.
Instead of walking down the aisle in the traditional way, Amara arrived by boat! Honestly, it was a dream for a Savannah wedding photographer! But more importantly, it was an exciting surprise for all the guests and Nonso!
Amara’s uncle met her at the water’s edge so he could walk her the rest of the way down the aisle, and the moment she came into view, Nonso’s face said everything words couldn’t. His eyes filled with every bit of emotion — happiness, disbelief, and pure amazement, all at once. It’s the kind of unposed, unrepeatable reaction that reminds you why photography matters so much. You can’t direct a moment like that. You can only be ready for it.

The couple’s Nigerian heritage brought incredible richness to the day’s fashion. Guests arrived in traditional attire — bold color, intricate fabric, and beautiful design that turned the ceremony and reception into a runway of culture and celebration. I was truly obsessed!
Amara wore three complete looks throughout the day: her ceremony gown, a reception dress for dancing the night away, and later, a traditional outfit for one of the day’s most meaningful moments. Each transition felt intentional, a new chapter in the same love story, and gave us endless opportunities to capture both the elegance of a modern wedding and the beauty of tradition passed down through family. As a wedding photographer who loves fashion, it was truly incredible.

After portraits, it was time for the reception. It was joyful, layered, and deeply rooted in celebration. During the couple’s first dance, guests began the tradition of throwing money, a joyful blessing that continued throughout the night as friends and family celebrated Amara & Nonso!
Before cake-cutting and speeches, the couple’s families had one more surprise waiting. A video for the couple that was filled with messages from loved ones who couldn’t be there in person. All the guests who had traveled in were invited to sit down and write little love letters to the couple. It was a perfect moment in the middle of a lively night.
After cake-cutting, we took the celebration back out onto the water for portraits on the same boat that carried Amara down the aisle. Savannah Cruise Company brought the boat in and stayed until sunset for photos. It was truly a great experience!
Nonso will be the first to tell you he isn’t a fan of water or boats — but he climbed aboard anyway, fully present for his bride, and the portraits that came from it are some of my favorites from the entire day. It’s obvious he’s already a great husband!

Later in the evening, Amara and Nonso changed into their traditional wedding attire for Igba Nkwu, the Igbo wine-carrying ceremony — one of the most meaningful traditions of the night, and an honor to photograph. This was my first experience with Igba Nkwu, and I hope it’s not my last! It was incredible to see culture woven into the wedding.
Amara carried a cup of palm wine through a crowd of guests, searching for her groom while family and friends played their part, laughing and attempting to misdirect her path. It still didn’t take long for her to find her groom. After finding Nonso, she knelt and offered him the cup. As he drank, the moment publicly sealed their marriage and called down blessings from both families. Afterward, the family gathered around the couple in prayer. It was such an honor to witness.

From there, the night opened back up into celebration — more dancing, more money thrown into the air in blessing, and a room full of people who clearly loved this couple well.
When it was time to go, Amara and Nonso were sent off through a tunnel of sparklers and into a beautiful vintage Jaguar, closing out the day in the same spirit it began: elegant, joyful, and entirely their own.
You deserve photos that bring you back to how it all felt – while capturing the beautiful details that tell the story. If you’re dreaming of a Savannah wedding surrounded by good people, meaningful moments, and actually enjoying the day, I would love to photograph it.
